Support Out of School Time Programs in Pennsylvania in 2023 budget

Recently HB 794/SB 789, the Building Opportunity through Out of School Time (BOOST) Act, was introduced in Pennsylvania to dedicate $30 million per year to fund local afterschool and summer learning  programs throughout Pennsylvania. Out of school time programs in Pennsylvania keep young people safe, inspire learning, and give working parents peace of mind. A June 2021 report from the Pennsylvania Joint State Government Commission found that for every dollar invested in afterschool programs approximately $6.69 for each $1 invested, which is based on potential benefits of reducing high school dropout rates, teen pregnancy rates, substance use disorder, and crime and delinquency.

Students in afterschool and summer programs discover who they are and what they love to do, make smart choices, and avoid risky behaviors. However for every student in Pennsylvania attending an afterschool program, 4 students are waiting for an available program. Funding made possible by the BOOST Act would help ensure thousands of more students have access to a quality out of school time program.
