I call on Congress to support an increase in funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative when considering the FY17 Labor, HHS, Education spending bill in order to ensure that two million children continue to benefit from local school-community partnerships that provide quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities. Afterschool programs help working families, keep young people safe during the hours after school when juvenile crime peaks, and improve academic achievement. These programs also provide children with physical activity and engage them in their learning.
